About

Welcome to Mostly Matt, where you will read about a variety of topics including interactive marketing, social media, sports, technology and harmless addictions. It will be legendary.

I have trouble reading books these days. Though I read online articles, blog posts and tweets all day, I can’t seem to sit down and read a book. I blame the multitasker in me. Skipping from one task to another has become a routine.

After thinking it through, I discovered that my daily commute was a perfect time to listen to some educational audio instead of just music. So, I started looking into audiobooks to play on my car stereo and found a great deal from Audible.com. Audiobooks are usually at least as expensive as the actual book ($15-25), but check this deal out. AudibleListener Gold gives you one audiobook download credit per month for only $7.49. You can cancel anytime. After 3 months, the price goes up to $14.95 a month (still reasonable), but at that point you’ve probably already saved around $30. I’m always on the search for deals, so I love promotions like this one. I already saved $20 on my first audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, which I will review in a future post once I finish.

The thing I love about audiobooks is that you really get to hear how passionate the authors are about their topics. With regular books I tend to re-read passages to fully comprehend the subject. In audiobooks, I rarely rewind but instead use the context of the other dialogue to fill in any blanks and save lots of time in the process. And of course, audiobooks are also very portable. I just throw them on my iPod and can listen anywhere.

What’s your experience with audiobooks? Have you come across any books that shouldn’t have been converted to audio? Any other good deals?

I am a huge fan of audiobooks since I have a long commute but personally I wouldn't pay for something I can check out at the library for free. That's just me
  • I'll probably do a combination of buying audiobooks and renting them from the library. It just depends on how new it is, its availability and how long it might take me to finish it. I'm pretty bad with library late fees, so it's probably worth the $7.50 to purchase it.
